1919
After his time in the army, John Ramey buys a small grocery store in Springfield, Missouri. When this small neighborhood grocery store proved to be successful, he expanded his grocery business to eight small stores.

1939
Ramey establishes the area’s first modern supermarket in an empty field outside of town. Due to the economy during World War II, Ramey consolidates his eight smaller stores into this one supermarket.

1946
Ramey sells the supermarket to two Kansas City men. These men build a second Ramey supermarket in 1954, a third in 1957 and a fourth in 1965, all located in Springfield.

1967, January 15
All four stores are sold to the Cohen family through Roswil Inc., a Maryland-based company. Under the management of Richard Taylor, the small chain grows quickly beyond southwest Missouri through acquisition and consolidation in rural markets.

1993
Richard Taylor transitions the management of Ramey to his son Erick. The company continues to expand and many Ramey stores begin to take the name Price Cutter, primarily those in the Springfield, Missouri, area.

1999
RPCS, Inc. becomes affiliated with the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper and title sponsor of this local stop of the national PGA tournament. The tournament is held each summer at Springfield’s Highland Springs Country Club. [As of 2009, the company has helped to raise more than $6 million for children’s charities in the Ozarks and helped make possible the construction of 5 Habitat For Humanity homes.]

Inside these stores customers find full-service Starbucks kiosks, large international aisles and an extensive variety of natural and organic foods and products.

2004
Because the company operates under more than two banners, RPCS, Inc. (Ramey, Price Cutter, Smitty’s) is established as the company’s parent name.

2005, January 1
An Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) becomes effective and acquires 100% of the stock of the company as of December of 2004. The ESOP is intended to give each employee a share in the ownership of the company. As owners, they will all share in both risks of capital ownership and the success and growth of the company.
